“Do you, like… hang out with him?” Lando asks when he’s two-and-a-half margaritas deep into their lunch. George’s sunglasses are perched on his nose again and his hands are propped behind his head, luxuriating. “Who?” he asks through a grin. Lando can’t tell without seeing his eyes whether he’s taking the piss or really asking. “Oscar,” Lando says regardless, rubbing the side of one finger around and around the rim of his empty plate. George had ordered something stupidly expensive, thanking Lando dramatically for his generosity while the waiter took it down. It hardly matters; everybody’s money goes around in circles at the beach anyway. George’s lips stretch wider around his teeth. He props one ankle on the opposite knee, then hums and says, “Sometimes. Usually he keeps his shirt on, though.” “He’s got that on you, then,” Lando bites back, lightly irritated, “I just meant… dunno. He seems- friendly.” “’Friendly,’” George snorts out a laugh.

“Okay,” Max tries again, steadier, “But I’m not- I’m here for you too, mate.” “Yeah?” Lando lifts his head back up, eyes sharp through the ache of the headache pressing in behind them, “’Cause you haven’t been.” Max is quiet for longer than Lando expected, and he hates the room it leaves for his words to sink in. He presses a knuckle in under the hinge of his jaw and finds that his hands are shaking again. “Lando,” Max’s tone is the same careful one from the bedroom, and Lando hates it – he hates it, “I’ve been, like…” “I know,” Lando says immediately, then again: “I know.” He feels ill, like he’s got a fever, or something, shaky and vaguely nauseous, uncomfortable in his own body, unsettled with the way his brain is sending thoughts ricocheting in his head. “I’ve been working,” Max continues, “the doubleheader. I’m trying to be proper committed, yeah? Because I’m new, and even when there’s not a race, there’s still-” “I know,” Lando repeats, needing desperately for Max to stop fucking talking about Formula 1. “I just said it, okay? You’re busy. Forget it. I don’t want to talk about it.”

Everyone talking about andreil why is no one talking about Jeremy wanting someone to choose him for once and Jean choosing him over and over and over again. ok, the OTHER thing is that Tamsyn Muir's writing style is -- it's exactly everything I've ever wanted or loved. By turns insanely technical, rich, evocative, and also *deeply* irreverent. You have high level vocabulary and an obvious love for language and worldbuilding pressed right up against the memes and sex jokes. There's nothing better. and it's even better that it very much isn't one-note, that she has a strong understanding of character voice, which is *so* important in this story where souls are all possessing each other's bodies. I fell in love with Gideon and Harrow, but I was just as struck and pleased with Nona, so happy seeing the language pare down and simplify, as the tone of the story morphed perfectly to match Nona's own way of perceiving the world around her. what a writer
